Garden newsletter winter 2013
Hello fellow gardeners,
Working Bee Next Saturday 6th July
A winter Morning Tea Working Bee. It will be cold so rug up. Bring composting materials as usual – we have become a Compost Making Machine! Lots of Jobs this month – we need you.
(Winsome;- “Please try to come, we have lots to do, and I can only get to a few Working Bee’s per year because of work, and I am missing you. I do want to catch up with you”)
We hope you are all keeping warm by mulching, weeding and feeding your winter veggies. If you haven’t already got your broad beans in its not too late to plant some seedlings!
To business: The plans for our Shelter are at the Council, and we are all waiting with bated breath for approval. Hopefully it won’t be long before we are turning the first sod!
The gum tree stump near the shed is being removed this week AND we have bought a greenhouse! It will arrive this week and so next Saturday we can prepare the ground and perhaps start assembling the greenhouse. This is exciting news and will keep us occupied during the cold months.
We are getting more sheep poo this week and bags may be bought at the garden – the price will be on the tin in the shed.
There are some pak choi plants in the top bed (where the tomatoes were) that are going to flower if they are not picked now. Please take one and leave the rest for other members to have. They look lovely. The leeks are doing well as are the lettuces, garlic and more pakchoi in the circular bed. The green manure crops are growing well.
The asparagus bed is behaving very strangely. There are asparagus spears coming up which is way out of season! I’m not sure why this is happening, maybe the warm weather and recent rains and all the food we gave them gave them ideas? I have just checked my asparagus bed at home and there are no spears appearing there. Does anyone have any ideas about this?
We recently received a wheelbarrow full of garden goodies courtesy of the Lions Club, which will be most useful; it was very generous of them. Perhaps you saw the photo in the local paper.
The current Newsangle has a segment and photo of our garden, please read it as there is a request for items for the garden
Well must sign off now and go snail catching!
